High School Design Day

Friday, Oct. 11, 2019, Moscow Campus

12:30 - 7 p.m.

Experience student life as an emerging designer at the University of Idaho during an afternoon of hands-on design workshops taught by expert faculty in our campus studios. High School Design Day is FREE and open to students in grades 9-12.

Dinner in downtown Moscow is included, and the Best Western University Inn will accommodate students and chaperones at a discounted rate if rooms are reserved by September 24.

Important Reminder: We must have signed copies of the Risk Waiver and Code of Conduct on file for you to participate in High School Design Day. Completed forms may be scanned and emailed to melissaa@uidaho.edu or brought to the event.

Workshops

All students will begin the day making a mood board — a visual brainstorming and communication tool that incorporates images, colors, textures and found objects. Design professionals use these boards when meeting with real-world clients about proposed projects.

Students round out their day in one of the following workshops, when they use their mood boards to influence their second design:

Architecture and Urban Design
Neighborhood Gathering Place
Students learn how to create a neighborhood gathering place, such as an urban plaza, commemorative garden, green space or other type of commons. This workshop also presents best practices in planning and designing — like how to enhance visibility, vibrancy, active and passive uses, accessibility and more — to blend these spaces into the surrounding neighborhood context.

Art + Design
Graphic Design as Visual Communication

Students scan their mood boards into a computer and use them as the foundation for designing a poster with industry standard software. This workshop focuses on the role designers have as visual communicators.

Interior Architecture & Design
Placemaking

Students will create a second mood board, using foam and upcycled materials, to brainstorm the design of a public space that meets the needs of people who frequent it. The mood board will also showcase the place brand and identity. This workshop allows students to engage in one of the most exciting design process steps — connecting materials with brand and experience.

Landscape Architecture
Harvesting Rainy Days

Students learn how rain gardens are used around the world to create sustainable landscapes that are focal features of landscape design. Students start by estimating the amount of water that can be collected from a rooftop, how to size storage for the water and how to design a landscape that features the collected rainwater.

Virtual Technology & Design
Virtual Reality Explorations

Students will visit virtual landmarks of modern architecture and interior design inside a multi-player virtual reality environment. They will meet inside the virtual world and create videos using virtual cameras following a mood board in space and time.

Apparel, Textiles & Design
Ready to Tear

Students will use paper to develop a half-scale garment based on their mood board. The focus will be on translating ideas and visual concepts into a 3D prototype.
