Attention to Detail

Thanks to a $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), MFA graduate student, Devon Mozdierz gained invaluable experience curating “Attention to Detail” at the Prichard Art Gallery. The exhibit brought five nationally-recognized contemporary printmakers together to showcase printmaking tradition at the forefront of innovation. Exhibiting artists included: James Bailey, Bev Beck-Glueckert, Timothy Chapman, John Ford, and Victoria Goro-Rapoport. From whimsical to darkly penetrating, the exhibiting artists explored the human psyche and its connections to the natural world, history and self.

The Prichard has been awarded five grants from the NEA in the past nine years. “This type of national recognition reflects the quality of our programming and our commitment to scholarly integration at the gallery,” said Roger Rowley, Prichard Art Gallery director. “Providing this learning opportunity to Devon was a win-win situation. She gained invaluable experience and the gallery hosted an exceptional exhibit of great contemporary printmakers.”

Mozdierz was thrilled for the opportunity. “This project began as an opportunity to highlight University of Idaho’s evolving printmaking program but this grant has surpassed anything I thought would be possible with my first curatorial experience.”

Devon Mozdierz’s focus is in painting and printmaking. As a transplant to Idaho from Weare, New Hampshire, her work combines the expansive grandeur of the West with the specificity and closeness of the East Coast. Growing up in rural New England and wandering through the woods fostered a deep curiosity and intimate understanding of place. Her paintings and prints are abstracted references to places where she lived. The imagery is a distillation of iconography specific to New England’s intimate scale and emphasized through the impressive Western horizons. Mozdierz’s work creates prosceniums inviting the viewer to associate their own personal history and understanding of place with the image.
