Is the Graduate Certificate Right for Me?

This certificate is for students interested in earning credit that could eventually be used towards an M.S. Bioregional Planning and Community Design. Graduate students enrolled in other professional degree programs may also be interested in this certificate to provide them with an emphasis in planning within their field of study.


  • BIOP 520 Introduction to Bioregional Planning (FALL)
    Virtual meetings, 3 credits
    Difference between planning and bioregional planning. Methodological and theoretical challenges of bioregionalism.
  • BIOP 521 Local and Regional Comprehensive Planning (FALL)
    Fully online, 3 credits
    Main regular land planning tools, regulations and legal context.

One of the Following

  • BIOP 530 Public Planning Theory and Process
    Fully online, 3 credits
    Critical reflection on the role of planners in connecting people and places.
  • BIOP 560 Bioregional Planning Studio I
    Virtual meetings and community visit, 4 credits
    Collect data and create a bioregional atlas of a community to determine defining attributes.
  • LArc 495 GIS Applications in Land Planning 2
    or equivalent course/demonstrated GIS competency (e.g. GIS Certification), 3 credits
  • GIS Competency3 credits

One Restricted Level Course - 3 credits

Written approval by the Bioregional Planning and Community Design faculty member is required. See Jaap Vos for a list of acceptable restricted electives. Topics include:
