Students with a Bachelor’s degree from a different discipline at the University of Idaho or another university may apply to the three-year professional MLA degree program. Students admitted to this program participate in an accelerated “bridging year” and then move directly into the graduate studio with students pursuing the MLA degree. The professional MLA degree fulfills all of the educational requirements needed to apply for licensure as a Registered Landscape Architect.
Students who already have a degree in Landscape Architecture from another university may apply for the 2 Year Post Professional MLA program. This option is desirable for students who may wish:
- to advance their professional career
- to pursue a research specialization in Landscape Architecture, or
- to teach at the university level.
The seamless B.S.L.A. to M.L.A. program leads students through a 5+ year program culminating in the accredited professional M.L.A. degree required for licensure. Admission into the landscape architecture program is a competitive process. Students enrolling in the undergraduate B.S.L.A. program must have graduated with a high school GPA of 2.5 or higher. Transfer students must also have maintained a minimum GPA of 2.5 at other institutions.
Complete University Requirements
During your first year in the program, you will work to satisfy the University of Idaho's core educational requirements, the College of Art and Architecture Foundation courses and preparatory courses for the study of landscape architecture.
Transfer Students: Courses you have already taken may qualify you for advanced placement.

The Pre-Professional Landscape Architecture Program
Upon completion of your first two years of the curriculum (required 100- and 200-level courses), you will be eligible to enter to the pre-professional B.S.L.A. Program. You will be evaluated on your transcripts, course work, portfolio and grade point average (minimum 2.5 GPA required). Students must apply to continue into Year 3 of the B.S.L.A. program.
Apply to the Professional Master of Landscape Architecture Program
Students are eligible to apply to the professional M.L.A. program during their final year in the B.S.L.A. program. The application includes a portfolio of design work, transcripts and a minimum GPA of 3.0.
The four-year B.S.L.A. degree requires a total of 128 credits. The five and one-half year seamless B.S.L.A.-to-M.L.A. program requires a minimum of 164 credits.
