Fall Academy on Mathematical Practices: Using Instructional Routines (2 credits: 1 fall, 1 academic year)

Join us for this free, two-day professional development workshop designed to promote students' mathematical reasoning skills, followed by three cycles of blended-format (face-to-face and hybrid) collaboration sessions during the 2018-2019 school year for K-12 mathematics teachers in Idaho. Based on Kelemanik, Lucenta, and Creighton's (2016) Routines for Reasoning: Fostering the Mathematical Practices in All Students. Educators will learn about practices and ideas used to promote students' understanding and Idaho's Core Standards. Presentations will focus on grade level content and pedagogy (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12) with a specific emphasis on using routines designed to promote students' mathematical reasoning skills.

This year-long professional development opportunity will consist of an initial two-day training followed by face-to-face meetings between August 2018 and March 2019. Participants will be asked to have read the book prior to the first meeting on Saturday, September 29, 2018. This fall's two-day meetings held on Saturdays, September 29, and October 20, 2018 will be an in-depth examination of the Standards for Mathematical Practice and the specific routines from the book. Teachers will be provided with examples of the routines and how to use them at various grade levels. In addition, teachers from across the region teaching the same grade levels will be partnered in grade-level teams; these groups will cooperatively develop classroom materials and lessons. Teachers will also develop research questions related to these routines which they will examine during the year.

There is no fee. Credit will be available: fall academy (1 credit) and three follow-up sessions (1 credit).

Teaching Mathematical Thinking (3 credits)

The Teaching Mathematical Thinking (TMT) is a course that fulfills the 3-credit MTI course requirement for Idaho teachers. This course provides an opportunity to study fundamental mathematical theory underlying the content area of numbers and operations and student reasoning of numbers and operations topics within a framework of a student-centered, problem-based classroom. Topics will include number systems, ways of representing numbers, meanings of operations and how they relate to one another, and computation within the number system as a foundation for algebra. Pedagogical topics will focus on attending to student thinking and reasoning through the use of discourse and questioning, professional noticing, and the effective use of manipulatives or other mathematical tools.

There is a mandatory $180 fee associated with the TMT course. It provides course materials and three Continuing Education credits. You will pay the fee on the last day of class.

There are no meals provided. Please bring a lunch so that we can take a quick break and finish earlier than our scheduled release time.
