Inspiring Futures | John & Carol Wallace

Idaho Alumnus John Wallace saw a way to build a lasting scholarship that allows Idaho students the opportunity to see and study the importance — and sometimes the difficulty — in governance among countries.

Wallace set up the Model European Union scholarship in 2008 after hearing about a course Irina Kappler-Crookston, chair of Modern Languages and Cultures, taught biennially with Phil Eyre, of Grenoble Graduate School of Business.

“We were discussing ways to make it a lasting program and help broaden the visibility of the department across the university,” said the 1978 graduate in Spanish and Anthropology. At the time, the course had no official sponsorship (or funding).

“So we talked about setting up a scholarship that would support the program well into the future,” he said.

Wallace and his wife, Carol, knew how important private support is in order to build a lasting program.

In 1999, couple set up the John L & Carol A Wallace Study Abroad Scholarship for Idaho students’ travel to Spanish-speaking countries.

“I had spent one year in Quito, Ecuador, in 1976-77,” said Wallace. His experience abroad was before the university had any official study abroad programs. He set it up with help of the Foreign Languages faculty and international graduate students who were studying at the university.

“It was a great experience, one which I have never forgotten,” Wallace said. “We are now fortunate enough to be able to continue funding the scholarship and also give other Idaho students an opportunity to spend some time abroad.”
