Torrey Lawrence joined the faculty in 1998 and served as director from 2013-2017. He is the Vice Provost for Faculty for the University of Idaho.

Torrey Lawrence has served on the faculty of the Lionel Hampton School of Music at the University of Idaho since 1998. As Professor of Music, he currently teaches the tuba/euphonium studio and serves the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Faculty Affairs. He previously conducted the Concert Band and Vandal Marching Band. He also served as director of the school from 2013-2017.
Prior to coming to Idaho, he was the executive director of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra and taught at Clarke College, Dubuque, IA. Originally from Tacoma, Washington, he earned a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees at Northwestern University, where he studied tuba with Rex Martin, and completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Tuba Performance and Wind Conducting at the University of Oregon, where he studied with Michael Grose and Robert Ponto.
He is currently a member of the Idaho Brass Quintet and the Walla Walla Symphony. Lawrence has also performed with the Spokane Symphony, Oregon Symphony (Portland), Eugene Symphony, and the Oregon Mozart Players. As a soloist he has performed recitals throughout the West and performed four different concerti with professional orchestras. He is in demand as a clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor.
He and his wife, Sara, live near Viola, Idaho, where they are supervised by their yellow Labrador and two cats. Their first child, Thomas, was born in 2008 and their second, Jane, in 2012.
