Kristen Tiede and the passion of preserving stories of the past

Broken porcelain, old medicine bottles, and other discarded artifacts are all that remain of the Kooskia Internment Camp, a World War II Japanese internment camp located 30 miles east of Kooskia, Idaho. Even many local residents aren’t aware of the camp which operated from 1943 to the end of the war, and held more than 250 detainees. Some day, as a graduate, I would like to ensure that stories like these are shared and not forgotten.

Majoring in anthropology has allowed me to combine my passions for studying history and anthropology. I started as a student volunteer in the anthropology lab, but today I work as a research assistant and manage the collection from the camp for the University of Idaho’s Sociology and Anthropology Department.

This is just one of the many hands-on learning experiences offered at the UI that you help make possible through your gifts to our educational goals. Your gift inspires me and students like me to excel in my studies both in an out of the classroom. Thank you.
