Dr. Tom Koontz - "Policy Research for Social-Ecological Systems: Institutions and Governance."

November 1
3:30-4:20pm Pacific Time
College of Natural Resources Room 203 A

My interdisciplinary graduate studies at Indiana University focused on environmental policy as it relates to human systems including institutions, stakeholder participation and community-based natural resource management, as well as natural systems such as forests, watersheds and the global climate. As a research assistant I collaborated with international scholars examining the ecological and sociopolitical aspects of community-based natural resource management and coupled human and natural systems. My Ph.D. advisor, Elinor Ostrom, was a political scientist who won a Nobel Prize in economics for her interdisciplinary work on natural resource management and institutions.

In 1998 I joined the faculty at Ohio State University in the interdisciplinary School of Environment and Natural Resources. Working with colleagues and students, I conducted research on collaborative environmental management, forest policy, watershed management and related environmental and natural resources policy topics. As one of the few social scientists in an environmental science program, I enjoyed helping students to integrate across disciplines and see the critical role of social science in solving environmental challenges.

In 2011 I spent a half-year sabbatical at Leuphana University in Germany, where I taught and researched in the sustainability program. This provided an opportunity to compare collaboration and water policy between the European Union and the U.S.

In 2014 I returned to my home state of Washington to join University of Washington Tacoma faculty in environmental science, environmental studies, and sustainability efforts.

To date I have published two books, five book chapters, and 48 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals including Society and Natural Resources, Environmental Management, Policy Studies Journal, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Environmental Science & Policy, Land Use Policy, International Journal of the Commons, Conservation Biology, and Public Administration Review. My graduate and undergraduate courses have included Environmental Policy, Public Forest and Lands Policy, Ecosystem Management Policy, The Science of Environmental Sustainability, Research Methods for Theory Building, Tragedy of the Commons, and Public Policy Formulation & Administration. I currently serve as Associate Editor for Society and Natural Resources and a member of the editorial board for Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory and also Policy Studies Journal.
