Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid is a certification program to help faculty, staff and students understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack — even with no clinical training — Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health related crisis.

This is an interactive 8-hour course that presents an overview of:

  • Depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, psychosis and substance use disorders
  • Risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems
  • Impact of mental illness
  • Common treatments

Courses are held throughout the year, and completion of the entire 8-hour course is necessary to gain certification. Participants needing to miss more than 30 minutes of the course will need to register for a different date.

Cost & Details

  • The course is provided at no cost for UI employees and students; textbook, refreshments, and supplies are provided courtesy of UI Student Health Services - Vandal Health Education.
  • A textbook and refreshments are included with course registration.
  • If you are unable to attend the course that you have registered, please contact amandaf@uidaho.edu to cancel your registration so we can ensure the proper number of refreshments and supplies.
