Work for Department of Student Involvement

Involvement Specialists are responsible for the general administration, development, promotion and implementation of programs hosted by the Department of Student Involvement. Involvement Specialists provide resources and assistance that help to make the University of Idaho a rich and vibrant campus by providing programs and support for over 200 student organizations, orchestrating multiple volunteer programs and organizing campus wide leadership and entertainment opportunities.

About Our Organization:

We are the Department of Student Involvement (DSI), and we work to engage students in events and opportunities outside of the classroom. We have seven areas in our department:

  • ASUI Student Government

  • Center for Volunteerism and Social Action
  • Vandal Entertainment
  • Student Media
  • Fraternity & Sorority Life

Our purpose is to empower students to "get involved" so they find their passion, purpose, and community, elevating their University of Idaho experience personally, professionally, and academically. This means each day we are busy supporting and serving students and their organizations as well as creating fun, educational, and impactful programs and events.

About the Team:

DSI employs a team of student leaders that operate as an interactive support team which aids the professional staff in all areas of the department while promoting involvement opportunities to all students on UI’s campus. They are called Involvement Specialists!

Our Involvement Specialists play an important role in our department’s mission of “Empowering students to challenge their standards, grow as independent thinkers, seek the truth, build inclusive communities, and have fun while doing it.”

While all our Specialists’ work focuses in a specific area of the department, they are each responsible for providing ongoing consultations to UI students and represent the entire department in various ways outlined here:

  • Table at involvement fairs or presenting at prospective student events.
  • Meet with prospective and current students to share various involvement opportunities available to them at UI.
  • Conduct trainings and workshops to aid in sharing information about involvement to students, staff and faculty.
  • One-on-one consultations with students to provide a brief overview and connect student to their new involvement opportunity.
  • Maintain, utilize, and regularly promote our platform Engage UIdaho, Corq App and DSI programs.
  • Attend UI recruitment events or classroom visits to promote DSI to potential and current students.

This position is for students who have accepted Work Study as part of their financial aid packages. Please reach out to the Office of Financial Aid with questions regarding the Work Study Program and any scholarship/loan questions.

Overview of Position:

  • One Days of Service Coordinator will be hired to work for the academic year of 2021-2022.
  • Generally hours worked will usually be 10-15 per week depending on funds available.
  • 10% of hours will be evenings and weekends, 90% of hours will be 8 a.m. through 5 p.m.
  • This position will report to the Program Coordinator for the Center for Volunteerism and Social Action.
  • Starting pay is $10.50/hour for new employees.

Job Duties:

  • Planning and executing programming for days of service: Make a Difference Day, MLK Jr. Day of Service and Saturday of Service.
  • Maintaining and updating the GivePulse volunteer database.
  • Serving as liaison between the Center for Volunteerism and Social Action, U of I students and our community partners.
  • Visiting sites, assessing agencies, volunteer needs, maintaining regular contact with the agencies, and recruiting new community partners for student volunteers.
  • Planning, recruiting, budgeting, marketing, executing and assessing events.
  • Completing administrative assistant tasks as assigned.
  • Attending UI recruitment events or classroom visits to promote DSI to potential and current students.
  • Participating in one-on-one meetings with the supervisor, the monthly student coordinator meetings, as well as any other required professional development training.
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Position Overview:

  • One Digital Media Specialist will be hired to work for the academic year of 2021-2022 from this search.
  • Hours worked will usually be 10-15 per week depending on funds available.
  • 30% of hours will be evenings and weekends, 70% of hours will be 8 a.m. through 5 p.m.
  • This position will report to the Events and Marketing Coordinator.
  • Starting pay is $10.50/hour for new employees.
  • Recruiting University of Idaho students in a degree-seeking program only.

Job Duties:

  • Utilizing equipment and related software.
  • Recording, editing, and posting video and/or photo content onto social media.
  • Supporting a social media strategy by creating visual assets and scheduling content.
  • Utilizing video shooting and editing skills to assist in promoting the Department of Student Involvement programs and services.
  • Working on deadline and manage project timelines.
  • Coordinating and communicating with students, and staff to refine ideas and determine project focus.
  • Sending the monthly ASO newsletter.
  • Maintaining Club of the Month and helping winners utilize our services.
  • Recording photo and video of key club events and share on social media.
  • Developing and maintain a marketing strategy for Engage and GivePulse.
  • Learning details about each Department area and make recommendations for collaborations.
  • Participating in one-on-one meetings with the supervisor and monthly student coordinator meetings.
  • Communicating effectively with students, faculty and staff.
  • Check in regularly with Assistant Director.
  • Serve on ISUB marketing/events committee if applicable.
  • Attend and present at University of Idaho recruitment events (UIdaho Bound, Envision Idaho, Sneak Peak, Meet the Vandals etc.) with Assistant Director.
  • Maintaining great customer service to all clients.

Overview of Position:

  • Three VE Specialists will be hired to work for the academic year 2021-2022.
  • Hours worked will usually be 10 per week, and up to 15 hours during event heavy weeks depending on funds available.
  • Regular hours outside of 8 a.m. through 5 p.m. is expected.
  • This position will report to the Events and Marketing Coordinator.
  • Starting pay is $10.50/hour for new employees.
  • Recruiting students in a degree-seeking program only.

Job Duties:

  • Play a vital role in developing a lively community on campus by contributing to the planning and execution of events.
  • Encourage students/peers to attend and participate in events.
  • Table for VE events.
  • Attend events planned by VE.
  • Maintain records, make decisions, and evaluate activities, including attendance and budget allocations.
  • Create risk management plans for events and programs.
  • Operate with a clear understanding of the University of Idaho’s mission and strategic plan.
  • Attend training, retreats, and leadership programs.
  • Maintain relationships with agencies and agents.
  • Follow up with campus partners and entertainers with thank you notes and other acknowledgements.
  • Prepare playlists of upcoming artists and concerts to promote at events.
  • Maintain and update the integrated marketing strategy for Vandal Entertainment as a whole.
  • Utilize and maintain social media platforms to connect and engage students.
  • Take photos at events, or request photo/video services from DSI Involvement & Marketing Coordinator, to post to social media and for archival purposes.
  • Learn and practice the processes and details of booking talent and following guidelines for contract approval processes including:
  • Booking, planning, executing, and managing day of event operations.
  • Executing contractual elements of each show.
  • Overseeing planning and production details (venue, run of show, tickets, promotion, security, artist relations, etc.).
  • Facilitate a lively atmosphere at events by coordinating with ESS staff on event planning, design, and execution.
  • Coordinate with ESS staff for event management during events.
  • Create and maintain collaborations with student organizations and campus departments, such as the Equity and Diversity Unit, to include keynote and lecture considerations.
  • Create new events based on the needs and desires of the student body.
  • Provide activities-based programming that is unique or trending.

  • Up to two Office Specialists will be hired to work for the academic year of 2021-2022
  • Hours worked will usually be 10 per week depending on amount of work available and availability of your remaining work study funds.
  • 20% of hours will be evenings and weekends, 80% of hours will be 8 a.m. through 5 p.m.
  • Majority of hours will be in the DSI office, but there will be several hours per week conducted outside of the office (but on campus).
  • This position will report to the Assistant Director.
  • Pay range is $10.50-$11.50/hour

Job Duties:

Office Management Role (33%)

  • Provide excellent customer service on behalf of our office, answer phones, email, and in-person inquiries from students, staff, departments, and prospective students and their parents.
  • Communicate and assist student organizations with their questions, print requests, and other ways they may use the office space and equipment.
  • Learn and use Engage UIdaho platform.
  • Support our student organizations during fall renewal process.
  • Keep office organized and complete administrative and office management tasks as assigned.

Involvement Specialist Outreach Role (33%)

  • Table at involvement fairs or presenting at prospective student events.
  • Meet with prospective and current students to share various involvement opportunities available to them at the U of I.
  • Conduct trainings and workshops to aid in sharing information about involvement to students, staff, and faculty.

  • One-on-one consultations with students to provide a brief overview and connect the student to their new involvement opportunities.

Job Duties:

Leadership Programs Specialist Role (75%)

  • Provide excellent customer service to current and prospective students, their parents, and other UI campus departments.
  • Learn and have a firm grasp on modern leadership theory and best practices.
  • Assist the Assistant Director with carrying out DSI’s Leadership programs such as I Lead, Vandals Lead, Women Lead series, Base Camp, POP-IN Leadership sessions, and various leadership “on-demand” training for student organizations, classes, and/or departments.
  • Help Assistant Director identify new leadership programming opportunities.
  • Assist with implementation of Applied Ethics & Professional Leadership (AEPL) program, a partnership with Career Services office.
  • Assist with implementing and evaluating leadership programs and leadership educational opportunities for students.
  • Learn and use Engage UIdaho platform daily.
  • Train and assist students, staff, and faculty on how to use Engage UIdaho to find leadership opportunities and other engagement opportunities.
  • Provide leadership guidance to student organizations, their officers, and advisors.
  • Communicate and assist student organizations’ officers and advisors to determine leadership training topics.
  • Groom collaborations with other Student Affairs and Academic departments to develop and execute new leadership programs and opportunities.
  • Promote all leadership and student organization program opportunities, as well as, other involvement activities to students.

Involvement Specialist Outreach Role (10%)

  • Table at involvement fairs or presenting at prospective student events.
  • Meet with prospective and current students to share various involvement opportunities available to them at the U of I.
  • Conduct trainings and workshops to aid in sharing information about involvement to students, staff, and faculty.
  • Plan and execute special events and programs in collaboration with professional staff, student organizations, etc.
  • One-on-one consultations with students to provide a brief overview and connect the student to their new involvement opportunities.
  • Participate in one-on-one meetings with supervisor, small team meetings, monthly Involvement Specialist meetings, as well as, complete all required professional development training.

Student Organizations Specialist Role (70%)

  • Provide excellent customer service and regularly communicate with our 200+ student organizations, by email, phone, and our Engage UIdaho platform.
  • Learn and use Engage UIdaho platform on a daily basis.
  • Provide guidance to student organizations, their officers, and advisors.
  • Communicate and assist student organizations with their questions, print requests, and other ways they may use the office space and equipment.
  • Assist students in starting new student organizations and registering on Engage UIdaho.
  • Provide New Student Organizations’ Handbook trainings and other trainings topics as identified as a need to clubs.
  • Support our student organizations during fall renewal process and any club management updates in Engage Uidaho throughout the year.
  • Maintain, utilize, and regularly promote our platform Engage UIdaho, Corq App, and DSI programs.
  • Attend UI recruitment events or classroom visits to promote Engage to potential and current students.
  • Promote all leadership and student organization program opportunities, as well as, other involvement activities to students.
  • Assist with organizing the Get Involved Fairs and other DSI events as assigned.

Involvement Specialist Outreach Role (20%)

  • Table at involvement fairs or presenting at prospective student events.
