Workers Compensation

When an incident or near-miss occurs:

  • Employees needing emergency care are directed to use any emergency room.
    • If medical care is sought, inform provider of workers compensation claim to avoid billing personal insurance.
    • Follow up care must be done through the designated providers program.
  • Notify your supervisor of the incident.
  • File an accident/incident report for any incident or near-miss within 48 hours.

Employees injured at work have a right to file a Workers Compensation claim. It is extremely important that a claim is filed for any incident where the employee has sought medical attention.

If you are injured at work, whether or not you intend to seek medical care, file an incident report within 48 hours of the incident. Quick reporting of the incident will help you comply with Idaho law regarding Workers Compensation and assist with the accident investigation efforts to mitigate the root cause of the accident.

Once the incident report is received by Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), EHS will file the claim with Tristar. EHS will also contact you to discuss how the accident occurred and look for ways to prevent additional injuries.

Tristar takes over all aspects of claim management, including claim details, medical care coordination, billing, etc. At this point, questions regarding your claim should be directed to our claims adjuster, Chanel Holland.

Employees needing emergency care are directed to use any emergency room.

Follow up care must be done through the designated providers program. Information on this program and its contacts can be found in the FAQs below.

When reporting time loss due to a workers compensation eligible injury, please consult with Benefit Services as various rules apply to the use of accumulated leave in coordination with workers compensation wage replacement benefits. Coordination with the various programs is important to avoid inaccurate payments.

Contact information for these providers

The University of Idaho is self-insured for workers compensation and has hired a claims adjusting company to assist with workers compensation claims. The name of this company is TriStar. If you file a claim, you will be contacted by a TriStar adjustor to help you with your workers compensation claim. If you have any questions about your workers compensation claim, please contact the claims adjustor. Please be sure to keep scheduled medical appointments and cooperate with others to help you through your claim. If needed, your claims adjustor will assign a nurse claims manager.

The university’s Benefit Services can assist with other benefits, such as Family Medical Leave, and is the office you will coordinate with regarding medical notes, doctor releases, etc., as it relates to the employment aspect of the injury. Do not provide this information to your supervisor or department. If you can return to work for “light duties,” the university will look for opportunities for you. Please discuss any issues or concerns with these professionals.

The Idaho Industrial Commission may also assist with vocational rehabilitation professionals. We encourage you to read information about the Idaho Workers Compensation claims process and regulations. Tristar

  • Tristar is the University of Idaho's third-party administrator (TPA) in Boise, ID. Tristar is the university's workers compensation claims adjuster. Tristar manages your claim, and makes workers compensation payments for medical care and lost time.
  • Tristar is your primary contact for your Workers Compensation claim, and will answer questions regarding your specific case, workers compensation care, and billing problems.

U of I Risk Management

  • U of I Risk Management is responsible for oversight of the university Workers Compensation program. U of I Risk can assist with general questions about WC at U of I, but cannot answer questions about your specific claim.
