Curriculum

The M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is intended for students interested in learning to teach English another language at the secondary or post-secondary level. Students take courses in linguistics and language teaching pedagogy. This curriculum provides theoretical background and practical training in the areas of second language acquisition and applied linguistics.

Core Curriculum (30 credits)

  • EDCI 466: Literacy Assessment and Intervention (3 credits)
  • EDCI 544: Teaching Culturally Diverse Learners (3 credits)
  • EDCI 548: Introduction to ENL (3 credits)
  • EDCI 549: ENL Methods (3 credits)
  • EDCI 597: Practicum (3 credits)
  • EDCI 599: Non-thesis Master's Research (3 credits)
  • ENGL 510: Studies in Linguistics (3 credits)
  • ENGL 517: Introduction to Applied Linguistics (3 credits)
  • ENGL 544: Sociolinguistics (3 credits)
  • ENGL 551: Theories of Second/Additional Language Acquisition (3 credits)

Total 30 credits

Note

Native speakers of English in the TESOL program must have studied a foreign language for at least one semester (or equivalent) within the preceding five years. Non-native speakers of English are excused from this requirement.
