Haiyan Zhao is assistant professor of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Idaho. She received her bachelor's degree in chemistry from Tianjin University in China, master's in chemical engineering from Tsinghua University in China and doctorate in chemical engineering from Virginia Tech. From 2010 to 2014, she was working at Advanced Photon Source in the Argonne National Laboratory using Synchrotron X-ray probes for catalytic materials characterization as postdoctoral research associate then assistant chemist. She joined the University of Idaho in August 2014. Dr. Zhao runs the Materials and Chemistry Laboratory at Idaho Falls Center with research capability funded by DOE infrastructure and NRC faculty development. She has been awarded 13 grants and contracts as PI, co-PI or collaborator totaling about $4 million, which include 10 DOE grants and 3 internal awards.

Dr. Zhao’s teaching portfolio has included three graduate core courses for Chemical Engineering including Transport Phenomena (CHE 515), Chemical Engineering Analysis (CHE 541), and Chemical Engineering Kinetics (CHE 529) and one Nuclear Engineering core course Spent Nuclear Fuel Disposition and Management (NE582).

Dr. Zhao speaks Mandarin and English. She has great working experience with international students and minority groups.
