  1. Explore the College of Engineering 360 Labs below.
  2. Explore the Campus Virtual Tours as well.
  3. And finally learn what the College of Engineering has to offer at the bottom of this page.
  4. Take note of which areas are most interesting to you. You'll need this in Step 3.
  5. Go on to Step 3.

Steel Bridge Competition Team Room

J. E. Buchanan Engineering Laboratory - BEL
Explore constructability, steel fabrication and steel design to construct and test a scale model steel bridge with the U of I American Institute of Steel Construction Steel Bridge Competition team!

Competing nationally, teams are given 30 minutes to put together their bridge from pre-built sections. Teams are scored based on many variables, including bridge weight, construction speed, structural efficiency, load testing and aesthetic. Last year, the team spent more than 800 hours preparing their bridge for competition.

Scanville Cybersecurity Lab

Integrated Research and Innovation Center - IRIC 133
Simulate attack-defend scenarios to improve the cybersecurity behind cyber-physical control systems, including smart grids, automobiles and medical devices. This laboratory is used for research on the design, implementation, testing and evaluation of software and combined hardware and software systems for analysis, machine learning, visualization, and intrusion detection and avoidance.

Nuclear Energy Lab

J. E. Buchanan Engineering Laboratory - BEL 335
Our nuclear engineering research is conducted in partnership with the Idaho National Laboratory and millions of dollars in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy. A viable source of low-carbon energy, nuclear technology is a critical research area worldwide. With skilled faculty bringing in major research funding, the College of Engineering is working to fill the critical shortage of qualified nuclear engineers needed in industry.

Biomedical and Chemical Engineering Labs

Integrated Research and Innovation Center - IRIC 220
Design and create more efficient biological and chemical processes to benefit society, advance technology, and reduce negative impacts on our planet. The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering conducts more research than any other in our college, giving students ample opportunity for 1-on-1 interaction with faculty and hands-on experience through research assistantships and scholar programs.

Mechanical Engineering Snowmobile Lab

Gauss-Johnson Engineering Laboratory - GJ 120
Produce innovative solutions to make cleaner, quieter and more efficient snowmobile approved by manufacturers and enthusiasts alike. Our Idaho Clean Snowmobile Team competes nationally in the Society of Automotive Engineers Clean Snowmobile Challenge each year. Our team has more than 50 awards to its name, including nine years of overall top three placement.

RTDS Power Lab

J. E. Buchanan Engineering Laboratory - BEL 09
U of I is one of the few universities nationwide to give students access to a Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) capable of simulating any modern high voltage power grid configuration. Simulation helps determine how real power grid equipment can be affected during blackouts brought on by cyberattack.

The RTDS Lab on the Moscow campus is also connected to a local control hub in the Integrated Research and Innovation Center, allowing students to mimic control operations and simulate what a cyberattack might look like as it occurs.
