Idaho Falls Student Commencement FAQ

Ceremony Times

The ceremony will take place 4 p.m. Mountain time Wednesday, May 19, at Idaho Falls Center grounds. The ceremony in Idaho Falls is subject to weather conditions. In the case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be canceled. Watch your VandalMail for any notifications.The time for other ceremonies can be found online.


No tickets are required for the Idaho Falls ceremony. Ushers will assist guests in locating the socially distanced seating area outside. If needed, a limited amount of overflow seating will be available in a campus building. Audience members in that seating area will be able to view a livestream of the ceremony.

COVID-19 Protocols

U of I branded face coverings will be provided for graduates, faculty and staff participating in the event. Face coverings will be required of all guests. All participants can keep their branded face coverings. Socially distanced seating will be provided for students, faculty, staff and guests.

Students will not be able to shake hands with the deans or president.

Doctoral and master’s students need to arrive at the ceremony wearing their hoods. No hooding will take place during the ceremony.

Yes, graduates will have the opportunity for a professional photo without a mask.


Yes, academic regalia, commonly called a cap and gown, is required when participating in the University of Idaho commencement ceremonies. Information on regalia requirements can be found online.

Bachelors, masters and specialist regalia ordered through Jostens will be shipped to the address provided and is yours to keep. Doctoral rental packages will be shipped to Student Services. When it is ready, the student will receive an email with instructions. After the ceremony, doctoral students will leave their rental package in the designated area.

Honor Cords

Graduates have been notified by email of their eligibility for honor cords. Contact Debbie Caudle at to arrange to pick up.

Student Line-Up

You should arrive and be ready for lineup by 3:15 p.m. A professional photographer will be on site to take photos before the ceremony.

Park in the lower lot at University Place, 1776 Science Center Dr. No parking permit is required for the event. The line-up will take place at the Bennion Student Union Building, Multipurpose Room, second floor, 1784 Science Center Dr. Watch for directional signs. Only students participating in the ceremony will be allowed in the line-up area.

Bring only the essentials you can’t do without and that will fit into your pocket. There is no place to secure other items during the ceremony. Come to the line-up dressed for the ceremony. Staff will be on hand to help with hoods as needed. The ceremony is outside on a grassy area; plan accordingly when choosing your footwear and attire.

The ceremony, including the processional, lasts about an hour.

There will not be a rehearsal. Trained marshals will guide graduates throughout the process from the processional, crossing the stage to receive their diploma covers, reseating and the recessional.

Processional, Ceremony and Recessional

The processional will begin outside, near the line-up area and maintain social distancing. The marshal will guide students to the seating area.

After opening remarks, guest speaker, faculty award and other brief remarks, the marshal will indicate when your row should stand and approach the platform area to receive your diploma cover. Each student will be individually recognized. Students will not be able to shake hands with the deans or president. After you receive your diploma cover, you will return to your seat. Social distancing will be in place for the entire ceremony. Hooding will not take place during the ceremony. Doctoral and master’s students need to arrive at the line-up wearing their hoods.

After the platform party exits, the marshal will indicate that you may stand and exit the area. The ceremony will be concluded at this point.
