International Programs

The Idaho State's 4-H International Exchange Program allows youth to gain a higher level of global citizenship through a personal connection with another youth from around the world. Youth can increase leadership skills, communication skills and develop a deeper appreciation of other cultures. There is meaningful impact for the whole family either through hosting an exchange student or traveling abroad.

Program Benefits

  • Emphasize the value of 4-H and similar programs throughout the world
  • Cross-cultural awareness
  • Opportunities to increase knowledge and appreciation of cultures
  • Become more informed of global issues
  • Increase self-esteem
  • Life skill development
  • Build friendships and memories that will last a lifetime

Traveling Abroad

Every summer 4-H youth ages 12 to 18 can apply for an opportunity to experience a full cultural immersion by living abroad for 4 to 8 weeks. All programs are chaperoned by certified 4-H adult volunteers who remain in-country with the delegation during the exchange for support.

Hosting Visiting Youth

Idaho families host between 30 to 40 youth and chaperones from Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan during the summer in-bound exchange. Delegates live with host families to experience what daily life is like in Idaho. We also host delegates from Costa Rica, Finland and Norway throughout the summer. Being a host family gives your whole family an opportunity to gain a better appreciation of other cultures and our own. Delegates arrive in July and depart in August, each matched with a host sibling close in age and gender.
