UI Dreams Come True

While growing up in Winchester, Tenn., Kandi Leigh Starnes dreamt of studying other cultures and was always buying books about people from other parts of the world and wanting to learn about their lives.

“I am a non-traditional student who never actually believed that dreams come true, at least not for me,” she said. “Not until I became a student here at the University of Idaho and received all the support I have. There are so many professors and staff members that really believe in what they are doing and through their encouragement, my desire to succeed and never give up is prevailing.”

For students like Starnes, the hardest part of attending a university can be the cost. Starnes is proof that UI scholarships can make the difference.

“Through scholarships I have been able to pay for most of my education,” Starnes said. “If it wasn’t for UI’s Disability Support Services showing me that I could succeed regardless of my learning disabilities, I would have given up a long time ago. Those scholarships are the reason my dreams of being a college graduate will come true.”
