The University of Idaho Leadership Academy is constructed to include guest lecturers, mini-lectures and community building exercises for participants to fully explore leadership in higher education. Through experiential learning, participants build relationships with others within the University and create a space of trust and respect. Participants are expected to actively engage in the learning events and to reflect and refine personal leadership goals in the educational process. Faculty and staff are eligible to participate in the Leadership Academy and members of underrepresented groups and women are particularly encouraged to apply. Technologies will be used to ensure that those members outside of the Moscow area are able to be active participants.
To begin the Leadership Academy experience, participants will engage in an intensive one day retreat in September with another scheduled in January. The retreats are held in Moscow.
The Leadership Academy meets approximately three times per month throughout the fall and spring semesters to learn about and discuss a variety of topics. These meetings are grouped into the following tracks:
- Leadership Theory (LT)
Participants will engage with readings from Bolman and Deal’s Reframing Organizations and have opportunities to interview University leaders to understand practical applications of the reading. Participants are encouraged to reflect on these conversations to explore their personal leadership styles.
- Leadership in Context (LC)
Participants will be introduced to organizational areas of the University of Idaho as presented by administrators. These sessions will provide participants the context and vision for university activities.
- Leadership Practice (LP)
Through case study, skill development, and special topic presentations, participants will consider the practice of leadership from a personal perspective.
President’s Leadership Breakfasts (Optional)
The President’s Leadership Breakfasts occur approximately monthly. Member of the University leadership come together to hear presentations on a variety of topics and make recommendations that influence the future direction of the University. The breakfasts are open to current Leadership Academy cohort members during the year that they participate in the academy. Attendance is optional.
