Joshua Redman and Vertical Voices to Headline 2020 Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival

MOSCOW, Idaho — Oct. 18, 2019 — The University of Idaho’s Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival – Feb. 28-29, 2020 – will continue its legacy of honoring traditional jazz music while highlighting the top musicians of today’s jazz scene. The festival’s evening concerts will feature current jazz icons Joshua Redman and Vertical Voices, as well as all 16 members of the Lionel Hampton Big Band – the first time in more than 19 years that the entire band will be in attendance. Preferred First Names Can be Used on VandalCards

VandalCards can now be issued in a preferred first name other than a legal first name. After recently pausing the service to consider federal and state issues that could impact the use of an identification card, it has been determined that inclusion of a statement on the back of the card is sufficient to allay issues regarding fraud. Becky Tallent Honored by the Society of Professional Journalists

Emeritus associate professor Becky Tallent received the Wells Memorial Key from the Society of Professional Journalists, the highest honor the organization awards. Tallent, who retired from the University of Idaho in 2019, has been an active member with the Society of Professional Journalists for more than 40 years and led its "Press 4 Education" program that places journalists in K-12 classrooms. The Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) invites faculty to submit proposals by Monday, Oct. 21, for the ORED RISE Equipment and Infrastructure Support (EIS) program. The awards are intended to enhance U of I's research, scholarship and creative activity by providing support for equipment purchases, upgrades and repairs related to research and creative activity infrastructure. U of I-Led Study Finds Experimental Fences Deter Elephant Crop Raiding, Provide Income

MOSCOW, Idaho — Oct. 17, 2019 — A University of Idaho-led team of researchers found that experimental fences reduced the number of times elephants left Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park to raid nearby crops by 80-95%; beehive fences appeared to be the most effective at deterring crop raiding while also providing a revenue source for neighboring villages through the production of honey. Exhibit Receives Honorable Mention in Publications Design Competition

“Whipping It Up: A Collaborative Alchemy,” the catalog designed by Delphine Kiem and Roger Rowley for last year’s exhibit by Garth Amundson and Pierre Gour, received Honorable Mention in the 2019 American Alliance of Museums Publications Design Competition. The exhibit was on display at the Prichard Art Gallery. The competition included catalog submissions from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago. Read more
