Mounting Drives in Windows

This tutorial applies to the following operating system(s):

Windows

Overview

After completion, you will be able to remotely connect to your U and S drives.

This tutorial will walk you through explaining what U and S drives are and mounting them on a Windows-based system. The steps to map your drives are the same for both on campus and off campus machines with one exception — machines off campus must be connected to VPN before mounting and using the drives.

Step 1:

One of the best things about the networked (U and S) drives is they can be mapped (or mounted) to any computer both on and off the UI network. Networked drives have the following file paths:

  • Shared space: \\files.uidaho.edu\shared\
  • User directory: \\users.uidaho.edu\users\

To mount the User and Shared drive, be sure your machine is connected to the VPN if off campus, and download the quickConnect tool directly.

Download the tool, entering your UI credentials
Enter your UI credentials when prompted.

Step 2:

Once the tool is downloaded, run it, entering your myUIdaho username and password when prompted, to mount the drives automatically.

Run the tool
Open the tool when it has finished downloading.

Step 3:

Once the drives are mounted you can access your data by opening your Windows Explorer and finding them under the drives tab.

Once the tool is done, your drives should show up under your computer drives.
You can now access your U and S drives.

Manually adding U and S Drives

Open a File Explorer window and have My PC selected. At the top of the window, find the Computer tab. Click that, and it will show a drop-down menu. Select Map Network Drive.

Next, pick the Drive letter. We recommend U: for the User Drive and S: for the Shared Drive. Then, enter the folder: \\files.uidaho.edu\shared. Once this has been done, hit Finish, and you should be connected to the Shared drive. The process for mapping the User Drive is identical, just put in \\users.uidaho.edu\users\(first letter of username)\(username) instead.

If you set these to reconnect at sign-in, note that it will only correctly reconnect if you already have the VPN running.

The manual setup can be done by going to "My Computer" and then selecting "mount a drive" from the top "Computer" tab.
