April 2018 - First Monday

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Last month, the College of Law had the honor of hosting great speakers at the Darrington Lecture and co-sponsoring the Policy Pub event with the McClure Center. In addition, we welcomed admitted students and provided many opportunities for current students to grow and learn. We are nearing the homestretch for the spring semester, with finals just around the corner. In this month’s First Monday, we congratulate our faculty who have achieved significant career milestones and welcome new faculty to our community. Finally, thank you in advance for your participation in Vandal Giving Day and support of the Law Excellence Fund and student scholarships.

Support the College of Law Excellence Fund and Scholarships on Vandal Giving Day

The College of Law is excited to participate in Vandal Giving Day, a 1,889-minute online giving event benefiting our students and enhancing the outstanding programs we offer. From noon April 24 through 7:30 p.m. April 25 (Pacific Time), you can support funds such as the College of Law Excellence Fund and our scholarships, among many others. If you have any questions or are interested in being an ambassador for Vandal Giving Day to help spread the word, please contact vandalsgive@uidaho.edu. Watch for more information coming soon.

Faculty Awards

Please join me in congratulating Professor Maureen Laflin and Professor Barbara Cosens for being honored as part of the University Awards for Excellence. Professor Wendy Couture is also being honored with the Mid-Career Faculty Award that was mentioned in the March First Monday newsletter.

Laflin is a recipient of the University of Idaho Excellence in Outreach and Engagement Award. This is a highly prestigious and well-deserved award recognizing the significant difference that Laflin has made in the lives of so many Idaho citizens. Her work has brought regional and state-wide recognition to the College and University reflecting the highest standards of professionalism and commitment to service.

Cosens has been awarded the rank of University Distinguished Professor. This award is bestowed in recognition of sustained excellence, as judged by her peers, in teaching; scholarly and creative achievement; breadth and depth in her discipline; and recognition beyond the state level that has brought distinction to the University of Idaho. Cosens has provided extraordinary service to the University and College of Law, and her scholarly work is of the highest quality that crosses various intellectual disciplines.

Promotions

Professors Aliza Cover and Helane Davis have been awarded tenure, a significant milestone in a professor’s career and recognition of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. In addition, Shaakirrah Sanders, John Rumel, and Stephen Miller have been promoted to Professor of Law in recognition of their continued excellence in these areas.

New Hires

Sam Newton will be joining the college next academic year as a tenure-track professor in Moscow. He will be teaching criminal procedure-investigations fall semester, and evidence and criminal procedure-adjudications spring semester.

Newton received his Juris Doctor from the J. Reuben Clark Law School, Brigham Young University, and is completing his doctorate in history at the University of Utah. He has extensive experience as a trial attorney with the Salt Lake Legal Defender Association and in private practice representing thousands of individuals charged with criminal offenses ranging from capital murder to shoplifting. In addition, he has been a professor at Weber State University and Flathead Valley Community College.

Visiting Law Professor from Mexico in Moscow

We’re excited to welcome Professor Maricarmen Sabido Basteris from the Faculty of Law at Anahuac Mayab University on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico to Moscow this week.  She is in town to teach a 1 credit class with Professor Jeff Dodge called “Mexican Constitutional History and Administrative Law.” The class will provide to the close to 30 students enrolled in it a general understanding of the Mexican legal and political systems, and will enable them to identify the similarities with the U.S. Constitution.  While on campus she will also speak with faculty, staff, and students.

Have a great April,
Mark L. Adams
Dean
College of Law
