The latest book by retired English professor Ron McFarland is a collection of poems, essays and stories about McFarland’s fishing experiences from Idaho’s lakes and streams to the Florida coast. “Professor McFarland in Reel Time” was published by A Word with You Press and is available at BookPeople of Moscow and online. McFarland, a professor emeritus, began teaching at U of I in 1970. Read more

Wu Receives USDA Grant for Green Nitrogen Fertilizer Manufacturing

Chemical and Biological Engineering Assistant Professor Sarah (Xiao) Wu received a grant for nearly $200,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to further her research using liquid-phase plasma to produce green nitrogen fertilizer. The most common nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing process is the Haber-Bosch process. This energy-intensive process involves taking hydrogen from natural gas and nitrogen from the air. Read more

Russia’s recent hack of United States government agencies and private companies has brought the spotlight back to America’s cybersecurity vulnerabilities. It also brought a spotlight to the reality that the U.S. doesn’t have nearly enough qualified people who work in the cybersecurity field. James Edward Calvert Jr

James Edward Calvert Jr. passed away Jan. 21. James joined the mathematics faculty at the University of Idaho in 1967. He was a dedicated teacher and mentor and was known for his work to prepare future elementary teachers and computer scientists. While serving as chair of the Math Department for 11 years, he created the innovative Pólya Math Learning Center to support students. Read more

Janice ‘Jan’ Elizabeth Pitkin

Janice “Jan” Elizabeth Pitkin passed away Jan. 21 at her home in Moscow. Jan worked at the University of Idaho in the News Bureau before transferring to the Department of Plant, Soils and Entomological Sciences where she worked for almost 16 years. She later transferred to the College of Natural Resources in the Department of Forest Products for another 10 years. Read more
