McLaughlin came to the University of Idaho in 1977 as a faculty member in wildland recreation management, now the Department of Natural Resources and Society. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees in chemistry from Middlebury College in 1953 and doctorate in organic chemistry at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. He accepted a position as assistant professor of organic chemistry at the University of Idaho in 1957. He served as acting chair of the Chemistry Department during his final years on the faculty and retired as professor emeritus in 1992. Read more

His parents were Howard Edward and Josephine (Joy Lawson) Frederiksen. Bill had three siblings: Kristine and Kevin (twins) and Janice. He graduated from Clark County High School in Dubois, Idaho, and then the University of Idaho in Moscow. His degree in agriculture served him well, as he worked with his dad, Howard, and uncle, Horace, at the family ranch in Kilgore, Idaho. Posted Mon, 16 May 2016 13:30:00 -0700The University of Idaho is saddened to learn that Daniel Ng, the artist who painted the iconic work “Athens of Idaho,” died earlier this month in Dallas, Texas. Daniel was commissioned for the colorful depiction of campus and the rolling Palouse hills in celebration of UI’s 125th anniversary and the inauguration of President Chuck Staben. The piece hangs in the Office of the President in the Administration Building. Read more

Owens earned a bachelor's degree in public relations from UI and a master's degree in rhetoric and communication studies at Washington State University. At UI, she taught public speaking, small-group communication and other courses. She had previously worked as a journalist at the Moscow Idahonian and the Appaloosa News. A memorial service is planned later this summer in Moscow. Read more

Nelson earned a bachelor's degree in public relations in 2011 from the School of Journalism and Mass Media. After graduation, he worked at Shari's restaurant, as a custodian for UI Facilities and in the annual giving office for University Advancement. Since January, he had worked at Boise State University. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, in the Barnwell Room of the Student Union Building at BSU.

Academically gifted, he breezed through the Butte schools, and then graduated from Montana State University in just four years with both a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics. He went on to the University of Utah for his doctorate, where he met and married his wife and best friend, Janalyn Steed. They had a son, Andrew, who brought great joy to the couple and became Paul’s favorite political debater, intellectual sparring partner and late night scotch drinker. Read more
