Library Supports Research by Lowering Barriers to Publishing

September 12, 2019

The University of Idaho is now part of a program from the open access publisher Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI) which publishes journals in a variety of fields. The program provides U of I authors a 10% discount on article processing charges (APC) when publishing in an MDPI journal. Approximately 168 articles have been published by U of I authors in MDPI journals in the past 10 years.

This program continues efforts by the library to support U of I researchers with publishing in open access journals. Where possible, the U of I Library aims to assist in lowering the barrier to publishing so a researcher will be able to publish based on the quality of the journal, not the cost of its APC. The primary way the U of I Library accomplishes this goal is through the Open Access Publishing Fund, but its staff and faculty continue to look for innovative ways to promote U of I scholarship and research.

MDPI publishes numerous notable journals in a diversity of fields, such as Sustainability, Fire, Energies, Sensors, Nutrients, Water, Minerals and the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. MDPI also offers various open access journals covering the humanities and social sciences. Active MDPI reviewers receive discount vouchers when providing review reports to their journals and can receive credit through the Publons system.
