U of I Students Receive Prestigious Goldwater Scholarships

April 02, 2020

The University of Idaho Distinguished Scholarships Program and the University Honors Program announced that Elizabeth Hoots (Ecology and Conservation Biology, College of Natural Resources) and Isabell Strawn (Biological Engineering, College of Engineering), both University Honors Program students, have received prestigious Goldwater Scholarship awards for the 2020-21 academic year from the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. Scholarships of up to $7,500 a year are provided to help cover costs associated with tuition, mandatory fees, books and room and board for sophomores and juniors. From an estimated pool of more than 5,000 college sophomores and juniors, 1,343 natural science, engineering and mathematics students were nominated by 461 academic institutions to compete for the 2020 Goldwater scholarships.

Upon graduation, Hoots plans to pursue a doctorate in Coastal Ecology or a closely related field. Her current research, mentored by Frank Wilhelm, examines how climate change affects aquatic macro-invertebrates.

Strawn plans to pursue a doctorate in Biological Engineering. Her current research, mentored by James Moberly, focuses on enhancing bioremediation techniques to remediate TCE-contaminated sites.

Of students who reported, 191 of the Scholars are men, 203 are women and virtually all intend to obtain a doctorate as their highest degree objective. Fifty Scholars are mathematics and computer science majors, 287 are majoring in the natural sciences and 59 are majoring in engineering. Many of the Scholars have published their research in leading journals and have presented their work at professional society conferences.

Goldwater Scholars have impressive academic and research credentials that have garnered the attention of prestigious post-graduate fellowship programs. Goldwater Scholars have been awarded 93 Rhodes Scholarships, 146 Marshall Scholarships, 170 Churchill Scholarships, 109 Hertz Fellowships and numerous other distinguished awards such as the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships.
