For Elephants, is Brown the New Green?

March 05, 2019

Paola Branco and Assistant Professor Ryan Long from the Department of Fish and Wildlife Sciences published in the Journal of Animal Ecology. They found that elephants in Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique, sought the greenest plants available when foraging inside the Park, but selected plants that were "browning down" when raiding nearby crops at night. Results of their study may help wildlife managers reduce human-elephant conflict by forecasting hotspots of elephant crop raiding, enabling targeted mitigation efforts.
