U of I Student Debate Club Members Earn Second-Place Honors

March 11, 2020

Members of the University of Idaho Student Debate Club earned second-place honors in their first two International Public Debate Association (IPDA) spring competitions. Four members — Daniel Welty, a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering from Shelley; Mariah Wood, a junior majoring in philosophy and sociology from Idaho Falls; Emily Reed, a sophomore majoring in sociology – criminology emphasis, sociology and anthropology from Boise; and George Bowler, a senior majoring in architecture from Boise — participated in the Earl Wells Memorial Speakeasy Feb. 14-17 in Corvallis, Oregon. Wood and Welty advanced to the semifinals in the Open Debate category, with Welty finishing in second place behind Oregon State University’s Tasha Robinson. On Feb. 21-23, Welty and Wood competed as a team in the virtual Climb the Mountain Speech and Debate Foundation’s Climb – Online Tournament. They finished second in the Open Debate category, behind Idaho State University’s Alyson Corgatelli and Joseph Tyler in a split-ballot decision.

“I’m very proud of our debaters and inspired by their commitment to civil discourse,” said Student Debate Club Advisor and Coach Diane Carter. “Judges consistently comment on the thoughtfulness, clarity and effective speaking style of our students. It’s not an easy thing to competitively advocate for one’s position without becoming overwrought, but our students take every win with grace and view every loss as an opportunity to improve. They are a credit to our Vandal community.”

U of I’s Student Debate Club will complete its spring schedule with an online tournament on Sunday, April 26.
