Robin Johnson Joins U of I as New Director of School of Journalism and Mass Media

January 29, 2018

The University of Idaho’s College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) is pleased to announce that Robin Johnson has accepted the position of director of the School of Journalism and Mass Media, effective Aug. 13, 2018.

The School of Journalism and Mass Media is Idaho’s only accredited program for the study of journalism, mass communication and related fields. The school offers bachelor’s degrees in five fields: advertising; broadcasting and digital media; film and television studies; journalism; and public relations.

“We conducted a national search that yielded many qualified candidates. Robin was the clear choice as he brings so much to the table,” said CLASS Dean Andrew Kersten. “We are so fortunate to have him join us to lead the School of Journalism and Mass Media into the next stage of its development.”

Johnson has a doctorate in mass communication from the University of Iowa and currently serves as an associate professor at Sam Houston State University in the Department of Mass Communication. His research focuses on gender, technology, labor and digital media. Recently, his publications have centered on the role of masculinity in video game production culture. In addition to his teaching and research roles, Johnson serves as the department’s graduate program coordinator and multiplatform journalism track coordinator.

“I am looking forward to joining the exceptional faculty and staff of the School of Journalism and Mass Media as the next director,” Johnson said. “The school will be going through a reaccreditation process and will look to develop a graduate program. I am excited to help advance the school's commitment to excellence in teaching, research and creative activity.”
