U of I Professor Emerita Earns State’s Top History Award

July 07, 2020

MOSCOW, Idaho — July 7, 2020 — University of Idaho History Professor Katherine Aiken received the state’s highest distinction for her impact in public and professional service, volunteerism and philanthropy in her field.

Aiken, a U of I emerita professor of history, was a recipient of the prestigious 2020 Idaho State Historical Society’s Esto Perpetua Award.

Established in 1999, the award recognizes influential individuals and organizations for their accomplishments in Idaho history.

“It certainly is exciting,” Aiken said. “I think it is a fitting capstone to my career as a historian in Idaho.”

As an emerita professor, Aiken’s focus has been social and cultural history, as well as women and labor.

Aiken, who earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 1972 at U of I, is the author of three books and often invited to speaking engagements throughout the Pacific Northwest. She has also won several teaching awards, including the University of Idaho Award for Teaching Excellence and the Alumni Award for Excellence five times.

Aiken was among 14 recipients of this year’s“Esto Perpetua,” which is named for the state motto, “let it be perpetual.”
