Winning Participants of 2021 Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival Earn Avista Scholarships

March 12, 2021

MOSCOW, Idaho — March 12, 2021 — Four participants at this year’s Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival will receive scholarships to the University of Idaho from the Avista Foundation for their outstanding performances.

Winning vocal soloist Sahil Novetzke, of Roosevelt High School in Seattle, Washington, will receive a $1,500 scholarship, and runner-up Azalea Teuton, also of Roosevelt High, will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Instrumental Division winner Mason Oyler, of Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy, will receive a $1,500 scholarship, and Nic Caballero, the runner-up from Mead High School in Spokane, Washington, earned a $1,000 scholarship. The scholarships may be used to pursue any U of I major.

“All of the students who participated did a wonderful job, they are all very talented, and we hope to see them again,” said Vanessa Sielert, director of the Lionel Hampton School of Music, which plays host to the annual three-day event.

Since 2017, Avista Foundation scholarships have been awarded annually at U of I to the top high school vocal and instrumental soloists at the festival.

“Avista is proud to support one of the largest and oldest educational jazz festivals in the world and recognize these outstanding students for their accomplishments,” said Paul Kimmell, regional business manager at Avista.

This year’s all-virtual festival, which took place Feb. 25-27, included artist and educational workshops, performances and concerts, including live performances of present jazz stars and archival footage of past greats, including Lionel Hampton himself.
