Two U of I Students Will Receive Prestigious Goldwater Research Scholarships

April 07, 2021

MOSCOW, Idaho — April 7, 2021 — Two University of Idaho students were selected from a pool of 5,000 candidates nationwide to receive the prestigious Goldwater scholarship for the upcoming academic year.

Nicholas (Nick) Pancheri, a junior from Moscow and a biological engineering student in the College of Engineering, and Peik Lund-Andersen, a junior from Sandpoint who studies molecular biology and biotechnology in the College of Science, are the Idaho recipients of the awards from the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.

Pancheri, who is also a student of the University Honors Program, is researching how a tendon’s specific function affects its development. Lund-Andersen, who plans to pursue a Ph.D. in biomolecular engineering, seeks to predict the susceptibility of animal species to COVID-19 through his research.

The scholarships are awarded for the final one or two years of undergraduate study and cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

Pancheri is mentored by Assistant Professor Nathan Schiele. Lund-Andersen’s mentors are Professor Marty Ytreberg and Research Assistant Professor Jagdish Patel.

The U of I students were among 400 awarded scholarships for the upcoming academic year for research in the natural sciences, mathematics and computer science and engineering.

“This is the second consecutive year that University of Idaho students have received two Goldwater Scholarships, a highly competitive award given to exceptionally promising next generation research leaders of this country,” said Dilshani Sarathchandra, associate professor and U of I’s Goldwater campus representative. “We are incredibly proud of Nick and Peik’s accomplishments.”

Goldwater Scholars have garnered the attention of post-graduate fellowship programs, including Rhodes Scholarships, Marshall Scholarships, Churchill Scholarships, Hertz Fellowships and other distinguished awards such as the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships.
