U of I Offers Summer Music Camp

May 04, 2021

MOSCOW, Idaho — May 4, 2021 — The University of Idaho Lionel Hampton School of Music continues the tradition of the Lionel Hampton Music Camp from Monday, June 21, through Thursday, June 24.

This summer’s camp will offer the same fun and music-making for high school and middle school instrumentalists and singers, but in a new livestreaming format that allows campers to perform alongside U of I faculty and counselors. Cost is $50.

The camp features recitals, masterclasses and opportunities to learn and perform music, but to accommodate the inability of most students to attend safely during the pandemic, the faculty and counselors have developed a new experience via a private stream on YouTube Live.

Each day will be built around a newly composed/arranged piece of music from one of the LHSOM faculty. The schedule starts with a faculty performance, transitions to small group practice and masterclasses with the individual faculty members and ends with a recording session in which the campers will record their parts to be added to the final collage of the performance.

All campers will leave with the new music, play along recordings and a greater ability to perform in a variety of musical styles and genres.

“The digital experiences that the LHSOM faculty and students gained during the pandemic allow us to offer something that our incoming students have been requesting for years — streaming content in a modern format that is entertaining and helpful,” said Sean Butterfield, camp director. “While our faculty are excited to work with the campers after last summer’s hiatus, our counselors have been even more excited to help us build a musical experience akin to the Twitch streams that have become one of the dominant forms of interaction among students today. This won’t be another Zoom class; we are focusing on interaction and getting the students playing.”
