U of I to Graduate More Than 1,500 During Eight In-Person Ceremonies; Kramer, Gramer, Shaw to Receive Honorary Degrees

MOSCOW, Idaho — May 10, 2021 — A total of 1,519 University of Idaho students have applied for 1,761 degrees for the spring semester, which ends Friday, May 14.

To accommodate Idaho Rebounds protocols due to the pandemic as well as recognize graduates of 2020 when in-person ceremonies were canceled, U of I will have a total of eight commencement ceremonies this month in Moscow, Boise and Idaho Falls.

“The classes of 2020 and 2021 will always hold a special place in the history of our alma mater,” U of I President Scott Green said. “These graduates have demonstrated, given the unforeseen obstacles of the pandemic, that they can overcome adversity and pivot to new ways of learning.

“We applaud each of our Vandal graduates for persevering through uncharted, challenging times. They can be proud they’re graduating from one of the top public universities in the country. We look forward to watching them make a difference in the world.”

Jerry Kramer, former Vandal football player and Green Bay Packer who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018; Rodney Gramer, president and CEO of Idaho Business for Education and a former journalist; and the late Col. William “Billy” Shaw III (posthumously), who was awarded several Army commendations, will receive honorary degrees during ceremonies on Sunday, May 16, in Moscow.

The commencement schedule, guest speakers and honorary degree presentations includes:

Saturday, May 15, Moscow (includes Coeur d’Alene students)

  • 9 a.m. — 2020 Graduates; Blaine Eckles, vice provost for Student Affairs and dean of students, speaking
  • 1 p.m. — Colleges of Engineering and Natural Resources; Mark Peters, executive vice president for global laboratory operations at Battelle Memorial Institute, speaking
  • 5 p.m. — Colleges of Graduate Studies and Law; Jerry McMurtry, College of Graduate Studies dean, speaking

Sunday, May 16, Moscow (includes Coeur d’Alene students)

  • 9 a.m. — Colleges of Business and Economics and Science; Ginger Carney, Science dean, speaking
  • 1 p.m. — Colleges of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Art and Architecture, Education, Health and Social Sciences; Shauna Corry, Art and Architecture dean, speaking; Gramer and Shaw (posthumously) receive honorary degrees
  • 5 p.m. — College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences; Kramer speaking and receiving honorary degree

Tuesday, May 18, Boise

  • 7:30 p.m. — John McCreedy, The Amalgamated Sugar Company, LLC president and CEO, speaking

Wednesday, May 19, Idaho Falls

  • 4 p.m. — Toni Carter, Idaho National Laboratory energetic chief inclusion and collaborator officer, speaking

As of today, May 10, U of I students have applied for 1,226 bachelor’s degrees, 130 law degrees, 252 master’s degrees, 54 doctoral degrees and 99 specialist degrees. The deadline to apply is midnight, Friday, May 14.

A breakdown of degrees applied for by U of I centers includes:

  • Moscow: 1,075 bachelor’s, 41 law, 235 master’s, 54 doctoral, 93 specialist (1,498 total);
  • Boise: 15 bachelor’s, 89 law, 14 master’s, three specialist (121 total);
  • Coeur d’Alene: 35 bachelor’s, four master’s (39 total); and
  • Idaho Falls: one bachelor’s, 13 master’s, three specialist (17 total).
