November/December
We are quickly coming to the close of a very productive and eventful year for our growing research enterprise, thanks to the hard and passionate work of our faculty, students and staff. In this final edition of “Scholars and Researchers” for 2018, I would like to share some highlights of our recent accomplishments.
Earlier this week, we celebrated a successful evening for one of ORED’s signature events: our SAS (Short and Sweet) Talks, which featured nine fascinating research projects that highlight U of I’s global reach to the world’s research community. Our presenters took us on a journey across five continents in just one evening, with each of our presenters giving a brief but accessible taste of their research in just 20 slides and 20 seconds per slide.
I was thrilled to be joined by over 120 staff, students, faculty, alumni and surrounding community members in the IRIC building to experience the event firsthand. Nearly 100 more individuals saw the webcast on U of I Live. If you did not take part, video recordings of these talks will soon be available. Look for them on social media and other outlets.
ORED has also produced a new fact sheet that helps readers visualize our university’s impact on the students, faculty, staff and citizens of Idaho. This piece, called “U of I by the Numbers,” offers a brief and timely glimpse of how our university touches Idaho — inside and outside our institution.
Our research, scholarship and creative activities are growing in size and complexity, and our researchers rely on many instruments and infrastructure to support this growth. In recognition of this, the Office of Research and Economic Development just announced the support of seven grant proposals totaling more than $100,000 through our Equipment and Infrastructure Support (EIS) Awards program. ORED is proud to make these investments in our research enterprise. We plan to support this program annually, and I strongly encourage even more faculty to apply next year.
2018 has been a fantastic year of growth and accomplishment for our research enterprise. And together with you, I look forward to accomplishing even more in 2019!
Happy Holidays, and Go Vandals!
Janet E. Nelson Ph.D.
Vice President for Research and Economic Development
