Polya Math Learning Center
Our pre-calculus and algebra courses (Math 108, 143, and 144) use an innovative instructional approach through the Polya Math Learning Center. The Polya Math Center, located in Brink-Finney Hall, uses technology to individualize the learning experience for each of our pre-calculus students. Additionally, beginning calculus courses (Math 160, 170, and 175) are supported with tutoring in the Polya Math Center’s Calculus Room.
Pre-calculus and algebra students are provided numerous options so that they can choose those educational tools that best suit their learning styles.
These options include:
- Online Homework
- Short topical videos and examples
- Tutor-supported lab work
- Traditional lectures for students who prefer them
- Detailed course notebooks
- Multiple tries at exams
The Polya Approach
Polya transforms the often destructive social dynamic of "one size fits all" classroom lectures into an adaptive structure that caters to individual student needs. Students attend weekly focus group meetings to share learning strategies, ask questions on course material, and stay on task. But most of their learning will take place through individual work in the Polya Lab supported by tutors. Learn more about the course set-up for the Polya Approach.
