M.S. Degree Requirements

A minimum of 30 credits is required for the degree, with at least 18 credits (6 courses) in mathematics at the 500 level (excluding Math 500, 510-519, 599, seminars, and directed study); the remaining 12 credits may include 400s and 500s level courses in mathematics, and 300s or 400s level courses in supporting areas.

Comprehensive Examination

The comprehensive examination is a 4.5-hour written examination covering six courses chosen by the student from their study plan, and approved by their committee.

These six courses must include at least five 500-level courses in mathematics. This exam is intended to test for standard knowledge in the courses chosen by the student, and problems are typically similar to what one would expect from a regular exam.

Retaking the Exam

If a student fails the examination, he/she will have one opportunity to retake the examination. The examination can be retaken only once, and the interval before the second attempt cannot be less than three months or longer than one year. If a student fails the comprehensive examination twice or does not retake it within one year of a failure, then the student is no longer in the degree program.
