Public Service Externships
Bridging the Gap between Theory and Hands-On Practice
Externships enable students to work for select public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and state or federal judges while receiving credit toward graduation. They also help bridge the gap between theory and hands-on practice and provide students with experience that gives them an advantage when seeking post graduation employment.
Field Placement
Each externship program course includes a field placement component with three aspects:
- Observation of, and immersion in, the day-to-day workings of a participating organization
- Professional interaction between the student and the field placement supervisor
- Involvement in specific legal problems and the resolution of those problems
Limited Licenses
Externs who have completed two-thirds of the required credits for graduation may qualify for a legal intern limited license to practice law in Idaho, which also allows them to appear in court during the externship. To review the Idaho limited license rules, visit the Idaho State Bar website. Other states have their own rules; ask your field placement supervisor to assist you with the process if your placement is outside of Idaho.
For help with completing the limited license Affidavit of Dean of Law School form, please email the Assistant Registrar - Law, law-registrar@uidaho.edu.
