U of I Law Students Step Up to Work the Polls For Election 2020

Last week we heard from three election officials in different parts of Idaho about how they’re dealing with an unusual year. Today, we’re continuing our conversations with the folks volunteering to make sure every vote counts during this pandemic election. “Idaho Matters” welcomes University of Idaho law students Danielle Strollo and Jeannette Moody. They are among about 80 law students who have stepped up to fill critical poll worker roles usually held by older folks, people who are more at risk of poor outcomes with COVID-19. Read and listen. Allan G. Shepard Professors Named

Kristina Running, Katie Ball and Dylan Hedden-Nicely were recently announced as this year’s Allan G. Shepard Professors. The Allan G. Shepard Endowment was established in the memory and honor of the late Chief Justice, “to enhance the mission and the reputation of the University of Idaho College of Law by providing it the means by which to attract and retain highly distinguished faculty members.” The Endowment directs the dean to “choose highly qualified persons with records of distinguished service to legal education.” Read more

U of I Accepts 110 Transfer Students from Concordia Law, Largest Number of Law School Transfers in the Western U.S.

Bieter will receive the award at a dinner today, May 9, as part of U of I’s Moscow commencement ceremonies. The Award of Legal Merit recognizes the outstanding contribution of an Idaho law graduate whose career exemplifies the best in the legal profession. This annual award is determined by a vote of the law faculty and is based on demonstrated standards of integrity, competence, service and leadership through work as a legal practitioner, service to the legal profession, service to the community or service to business/state/national interests. At 12:30 Mountain time Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the Idaho Law and Justice Learning Center, Room 313, Boise (connecting 11:30 Pacific time, Menard Law Building, Room 104, Moscow), the College of Law will present a lecture with Thomas A. Saenz, President and General Counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF). Mr. Saenz will discuss the impact of the Trump Administration's immigration policies on Latino communities in the United States as well as how those communities and their advocates have responded to protect immigrant families. Mr. Saenz will also explain the legal challenges MALDEF has led in the federal courts and the reforms needed to establish a more effective and fair immigration system. Read more

U of I College of Law a Leader in Idaho’s Pro Bono Service

Students at the University of Idaho College of Law have provided at least $25 million in free legal services in the 10 years since pro bono service became a graduation requirement. This week, Oct. 21-27, marks the 10th anniversary of the National Celebration of Pro Bono by the American Bar Association and has been designated as Pro Bono Week by the Idaho Supreme Court. The College of Law’s third-year law students are also the 10th class required to complete first 40 hours, now 50 hours, of pro bono legal services in order to graduate. Read more

Key Figure in Rajneeshpuram Community to Speak Sept. 26 at U of I

A close associate to an Indian mystic who established a controversial community in central Oregon in the 1980s will speak Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the University of Idaho. Philip Niren Toelkes, the attorney for Osho (better known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh) from 1981-91, will tell about his efforts to defend Osho and the community of Rajneeshpuram in north central Oregon against international intrigue and U.S. government efforts to prosecute him. His talk, “USA v. Osho: The True Story of Osho in Oregon,” begins at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 26 in the Administration Building Auditorium, Moscow.
